Thoughts on Dilan 1990

I just happened to watch a super(b) cliché Indonesian movie, called Dilan 1990, and it was such a traumatizing experience for me to say the least. I’m not complaining about the one who acts as Dilan though—Iqbaal Ramadhan, nope, not at all. It’s just his character, the Dilan himself, who makes me wanting to throw every possible items located near my range to the movie screen. He is super duper cheesy, Dilan is one greasy little shit. Everything coming from his mouth is sin.

I don’t really like the characterization of the main role. Dilan is portrayed as a highschool student, a little bit delinquent, I guess, being a member of motorcycle gang in his school. He is head over heels for the new student, Milea, and you can guess the rest, cheese is being spread non stop throughout the whole movie. But that’s not the main point of my argument.

Being deadass cheesy isn’t going to make me criticizing the character (because honestly I giggled 85% of the time because of the cheesiness), but chasing over a pretty girlfriend of other man is.

It’s not, by all means, Dilan’s fault. This is going to be difficult for me to explain. The girl is also at fault in this matter, knowing that she is already having a boyfriend who lives in the other city, but she is still accepting Dilan’s mate-calling. This whole ordeal seems so fucked up in every angle possible. I’m the type of person who thinks that girls supposed to be loyal to their partners and not accepting and even considering other men’s love attempts. When you are in a relationship with someone, you have to be committed to that person. Some of you might call me narrow-minded but I really hold to that thought since I was 2.

For instances, Milea keeps waiting for Dilan’s phone call and gets excited for it. It is also really irking me off when there is this one scene where Dilan thought that Milea is in a relationship with this guy named Nandan, causing him to stop calling Milea and start to ignore Milea at school. I guess Dilan knows his position and he tries to give Milea her personal space. Later on, Milea asks Dilan’s bestfriend to inform Dilan that Milea is, in fact, not having any relation with Nandan. Milea is really eager to solve the misunderstanding so that Dilan will hit her up again through phone call like usual.

I got really pissed.

And Dilan? Have I told you that I hate how Dilan goes straight to chase after Milea when they just met? Milea does not even know him in the first place? Yes, men are after the face. I suppose.

I haven’t read the book yet, so I don’t know whether the author explains Dilan and Milea’s first meeting clearly. But I gotta be honest, the idea of Dilan chasing over Milea because she is just a pretty face does not sit well in the back of my mind. I resent boys for it. Like? What if Milea is some serial killer in her previous school? Milea accepting Dilan’s love attempts and not being honest to him that she is off-limits, makes me pissed. It feels like she is cheating on her boyfriend. No offense. Well, yeah, even though Milea breaks up with his boyfriend in the end.

Other than that, the plot is okay, even though I feel like there is no climax to it. I feel like watching a teenage drama with no plot at all. It’s all about Dilan chasing after Milea and Milea falls for him, jealousy here jealousy there, teenagers having a fight, they get their happy ending by getting together, and yada yada.

Iqbaal Ramadhan heals my disappoinment though. He is the center of the movie, The Man of The Century, dropdead gorgeous, so charming, so charismatic. I am swooned real hard.

In conclusion, if you are the type of person who enjoys teenage drama then I would recommend you this movie. But if you think that the over-cheesy romance is completely not your forté, I recommend you to just save your time and watch anime at home instead.
